All living things have basic needs that must be met in order for them to survive. These are the need for oxygen to breathe; water to drink; food for energy; protection/shelter from weather, disease, and predators; and the need to reproduce more of their own kind. The lessons in this module look at the requirements of salmonids to meet their basic needs. Because their life cycle is anadromous, their habitat requirements change throughout their lives.

During the different stages of development, salmonids spend time in the upper reaches of fresh water streams; continue development and growth in the main stem of the rivers; make the change to salt water in the estuary systems; reach maturity in the open ocean; and complete the cycle by returning to the upper reaches of the streams to spawn a new generation. Humans have an impact on all habitats that salmonids occupy. It is important that we all understand what the needs of the salmonids are so we can know what steps to take to protect this valuable resource.
