The living world is sorted and grouped, based on observable characteristics. Organisms are classified on increasingly specific shared structures. What distinguish fish from other animals are three key shared characteristics or structures, namely lateral lines, gills, and fins. All living things have physical characteristics that allow them to survive in a particular environment.

Knowing what animals do to survive allows one to make predictions about their characteristics. In Form Follows Function, students will learn about these characteristics and how the salmonids use them to meet their basic needs for food, water, oxygen, protection and reproduction.
